This is a film from the Douthwaite Collection showing their son, Kenneth, during his first five years. The film includes celebrations for his christening as well as a holiday to Scarborough.
(B&W) The film begins showing an invitation card for the christening of the new baby, Kenneth Francis Douthwaite for 5th February, 1961 at St Aiden’s Parish Church. Baby Kenneth is sitting, playing on the floor. He is then being held by his mother. Later, the baby is taken outside by his mother and is helped to take some first steps, helped with a harness being held by an elderly man. Back inside the house, he plays with a ball and other toys, running about and crawling.
(Col) The film switches to Kenneth with a spade on the beach at Scarborough, and he tries to climb the wall while his mother sits in a deckchair. His father gives him a flying angel, and there is another small girl and an ice cream van. Kenneth and his mother go for a walk along the sea front, past a shop with a large advertisement for Velvet Lady Dairy Soft ice cream. The two of them are then with another woman with a small child, by a pond with a model boat and on the beach, where there is also an older girl. Again Kenneth gets a flying angel from his father.
Then, a couple of years later, there is another small baby in a pram. He is being tickled by Kenneth’s father, and then lying on a bed with Kenneth, who later plays in the garden with his father. The smaller child goes on a swing and then pushes a small cart, helped by Kenneth’s father. Kenneth is on a tricycle. The smaller child is put to bed. Two girls play on a slide in the garden. Kenneth, again on his tricycle, has an ice cream, as does the smaller child and then plays on a swing in a park. The small child takes some first steps when they are visiting elderly relatives.
They take a trip on the galleon at Scarborough and then on the miniature railway. They then play on the sand on the beach with a water pistol, near other families. The two children then take a donkey ride along the beach and the film comes to an end.
