Title - The Story of My Life Starring Peter Gray [written in chalk on a blackboard by Peter aged about 9]
Peter digs a channel in the garden for his toy car, and is then standing up on a swing in a park, watched by his younger sister, Julie. Then he is out in the countryside with his father next to the family car (reg. 569 WB) flying a kite. This is followed by Peter in his back garden with a friend putting up a couple of tents. He enters the garden with his cowboy hat on.
The film switches to Peter turning up to his school, Nether Green County School.
Intertitle – Peter, eight years old today.
Peter is in the garden opening a present while his little sister looks on. It’s a model of a jet aircraft. He then opens his birthday card. Next Peter is taken out to the countryside by his father with his school friends, all in school uniform, where they play a game of cricket. After this they have a picnic. Peter climbs a tree and Julia feeds a sheep before they all climb back into the car.
Then there is the sign for Millyview Riding Stables [in Fulwood, Sheffield]. Peter and his mother both hold up a black and white kitten sitting in a riding cap, and which then plays on the ground. Peter is helped onto pony and goes off riding with a group of other riders.
The film switches to back home where Peter is putting on his cub’s uniform. Next he is sitting along with the rest of his cubs group on the grass eating, behind a banner declaring ‘Hallam’. They, and many other cub clubs, are participating in a large-scale re-enactnment of a cowboy’s and Indian’s battle, with Peter and his outfit in war paint. This is followed by the re-enactment of another battle in British history and then some other strange event where many of them wear square boxes on their heads, accompanied by a scout band playing.
Then Peter and his school friends emerge from a car and run into some woods before being in the garden at a children’s party. Peter pours out glasses if Tizer. He plays with a crossbow with his friends and they go down to Endcliffe Park, Sheffield, and play cricket. Then, the front of the Rising Sun pub in Fulwood is shown, and Peter is in outdoor swimming pool, possibly Longley Park. He and several other children float in small inflatable dingys.
Then there is a scout and cub parade, with Peter, at the bottom of Division Street and assembling outside Sheffield City Hall. Then they are next marching on the pavement along what looks like Rustlings Road next to Endcliffe Park. Peter holds the banner for the 29th Sheffield Wolf Cubs, Montgomery. They arrive at Broompark Congregational Church, with the notice board showing that the Minister is Rev. H Sharp. They march into the Church, and then re-emerge into the bright sunlight, followed by a couple of newlyweds, who stand in the doorway as the cubs do a salute, and then get into the waiting car.
The film switches to a year or two further on, with Peter and a group of scouts setting up camp in a field. The scouts form a circle and select where to put up their tent, which they do. Now out of their uniform they relax on the grass, accompanied by a girl, possibly Julie.
Moving on a few more years, and Peter is leaving home on a BSA motorcycle. This is followed by a photo of Peter, sporting a beard, and declaring ‘21 Today’.
Intertitle – Four Years on
There is a board with photographs and captions stating, ‘’Hurray, we’re engaged!’, ‘Mary’s 20th birthday June 12th, 1974
Intertitle – And on Sep. 20 1975. . we were married
Photos of the occasion are shown. Then there is the street sign for Livingstone Road (formerly King Street), and then a sign for Burncross, 1 mile.
Peter’s newlywed wife, Mary, and his sister Julie, are outside a house on a new housing estate. Mary is clearing up in the back garden, and is joined by Peter as they tend to some plants and the film comes to an end.
